Computer শব্দটির সাধারণ অর্থ হচ্ছে গণক যন্ত্র। ল্যাটিন শব্দ Compute থেকে ইংরেজী Computer শব্দের উৎপত্তি। Compute শব্দটির অর্থ গণনা বা হিসাব নিকাশ করা। কম্পিউটারের সাহায্যে মূলতঃ যোগ, বিয়োগ, গুণ, ভাগ ইত্যাদি কার্যাবলী সম্পাদন করা যায়। কিন্তু বর্তমান যুগে কম্পিউটারের বহুমুখী ব্যবহারের ফলে কম্পিউটারের সংঙ্গা অনেক ব্যাপকতা লাভ করেছে। কোন সীমিত সংঙ্গা দিয়ে আর কম্পিউটারকে গন্ডীবদ্ধ করা যায় না।
