Merkel cells, also known as tactile cells, are found in the stratum basale of the epidermis and play an important role in sensory perception. These cells are closely associated with sensory nerve endings and help to detect light touch and pressure. Additionally, Merkel cells are also involved in enabling water to remain atop the structure by creating a seal between adjacent skin cells that prevents water from leaking out of the body.
