Let the present ages of the three colleagues be 3x, 5x, and 7x respectively.
The sum of their ages four years ago is equal to their present ages minus 4 years for each of them, 

which is equal to (3x - 4) + (5x - 4) + (7x - 4) = 48.
Combining like terms, we get 15x - 12 = 48.
Adding 12 to both sides, we get 15x = 60.
Dividing both sides by 15, we get x = 4.

Therefore, the present ages of the three colleagues are
 3x = 3 * 4 = 12 years, 5x = 5 * 4 = 20 years, 
and 7x = 7 * 4 = 28 years.
