Past Perfect Tense Translations: পুরাঘটিত অতীত কাল :
যে ক্রিয়া অতীতের বহু পূর্বেই সংঘটিত হয়ে গিয়েছে এবং যার পরে আরও কিছু ঘটনা ঘটে গেছে, তার কালকে পুরাঘটিত অতীত কাল বলা হয়। যেমন-
সেবার তাকে সুস্থই দেখেছিলাম।
কাজটি কি তুমি করেছিলে?
(ক) অতীতে সংঘটিত ঘটনার নিশ্চিত বর্ণনায় :
পানিপথের তৃতীয় যুদ্ধে এক লক্ষ সৈন্য মারা গিয়েছিল।
আমি সমিতিতে সেদিন পাঁচ টাকা নগদ দিয়েছিলাম।
(খ) অতীতে সংঘটিত ক্রিয়ার পরম্পরা বোঝাতে শেষ ক্রিয়াপদে পুরাঘটিত অতীত কালের প্রয়োগ হয়। যেমন-
বৃষ্টি শেষ হওয়ার পূর্বেই আমরা বাড়ি পৌঁছেছিলাম।

Rule:
অতীতের ঘটনার মধ্যে যেটি আগে ঘটেছিল সেটি Past Perfect Tense এবং পরেরটি Simple Past হয়।
We use the past perfect to show that one action or event happened before another action or event in the past. We use the past perfect for the action that happened first and the past simple for the action that happened later:

When we arrived, the film had already started.
We often use when and by the time with the past simple to talk about the second of two actions or events in the past. Notice when we use a comma (,):

When we got to the airport, the plane had already taken off.

a. পূর্বে কোন একটি কাজ (past action) শুরু হওয়ার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে যদি আর একটি কাজ শুরু হয় এবং তা যদি no sooner. than, scarcely----- when, hardly---before এর সঙ্গে past perfect tense ব্যবহার হয়।

b. দুইটি অতীত কালের কাজ বুঝালে এবং একটির আগে when, untill, once, now, that, as soon as ইত্যাদি conjunction থাকলে তার (conjunction এর) পরের verb টির past perfect tense হয়।

c. একটি কাজ আর একটি কাজ আরম্ভের পূর্বে ঘটেছিল বুঝালে পূর্ববর্তী কাজটির Past perfect tense হয় এবং অপরটির Past Indefinite tense হয়।

d. Just এর সাথে past perfect tense ব্যবহৃত হয় যদি অন্য verb টির tense হয় past indefinite tense. যেমন : When I came he had just finished eating. (যখন আমি এলাম সে ঠিক তখনই খাওয়া শেষ করল।)

নোটঃ
সাধারণত অতীতে সংঘটিত দুটি কাজের একটি অপরটির পূর্বে সংঘটিত হলে, যেটি পূর্বে ঘটে সেটির জন্য Past Perfect Tense ব্যবহৃত হয়।
