Introduction — ভূমিকা

Prepositions of time are words that connect an action or event to a particular time. Preposition of time এমন শব্দ, যা কোনো কাজ বা ঘটনাকে একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের সঙ্গে যুক্ত করে।

They help us explain when something happens, how long it continues, when it begins, and when it ends. এগুলো আমাদের বলতে সাহায্য করে কোনো ঘটনা কখন ঘটে, কতক্ষণ চলে, কখন শুরু হয় এবং কখন শেষ হয়।

The most common prepositions of time are at, on, and in. সময়ের সবচেয়ে প্রচলিত preposition হলো at, on এবং in। We also use words such as before, after, during, since, for, by, until, from, to, within, and throughout. আমরা before, after, during, since, for, by, until, from, to, within এবং throughout-এর মতো শব্দও ব্যবহার করি।

1. What Is a Preposition of Time? — Preposition of time কী?

A preposition of time shows the relationship between an action and time. Preposition of time একটি কাজ ও সময়ের মধ্যকার সম্পর্ক বোঝায়।

“At” points to a time on the clock, “on” points to a day on the calendar, and “in” points to a larger block of time. “At” ঘড়ির একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময় দেখায়, “on” ক্যালেন্ডারের একটি দিন দেখায়, এবং “in” সময়ের একটি বড় অংশ দেখায়।

2. At for Exact Time — নির্দিষ্ট সময়ে At

We use at with an exact clock time or a specific point in time. নির্দিষ্ট ঘড়ির সময় অথবা সময়ের নির্দিষ্ট একটি মুহূর্তের সঙ্গে at ব্যবহার করা হয়।

We use on with days of the week, dates, and named days. সপ্তাহের দিন, তারিখ এবং বিশেষভাবে নাম দেওয়া দিনের সঙ্গে on ব্যবহার করা হয়।

4. In for Months, Years and Longer Periods — দীর্ঘ সময়কালে In

We use in with months, years, seasons, centuries, decades, and parts of the day. মাস, বছর, ঋতু, শতাব্দী, দশক এবং দিনের অংশের সঙ্গে in ব্যবহার করা হয়।

6. No Preposition with This, Last, Next and Every — কখন preposition বসে না

We normally do not use at, on, or in before time expressions beginning with this, last, next, every, today, tomorrow, or yesterday. This, last, next, every, today, tomorrow অথবা yesterday দিয়ে শুরু হওয়া সময়ের expression-এর আগে সাধারণত at, on অথবা in বসে না।

7. Before and After — আগে ও পরে

Before means earlier than a particular time or event. Before মানে কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সময় বা ঘটনার আগে।

After means later than a particular time or event. After মানে কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সময় বা ঘটনার পরে।

8. During — কোনো সময়কালের মধ্যে

We use during to say that something happens within a particular event or period. কোনো নির্দিষ্ট ঘটনা বা সময়কালের মধ্যে কিছু ঘটে বোঝাতে during ব্যবহার করা হয়।

9. During vs While — During ও While-এর পার্থক্য

During is followed by a noun or noun phrase. During-এর পরে noun অথবা noun phrase বসে।

While is followed by a subject and verb. While-এর পরে subject ও verb-সহ clause বসে।

10. For — সময়ের দৈর্ঘ্য

We use for to show the duration or length of an action. কোনো কাজ কতক্ষণ বা কত দীর্ঘ সময় ধরে চলে তা বোঝাতে for ব্যবহার করা হয়।

11. Since — শুরুর নির্দিষ্ট সময়

We use since to show the point when an action or situation began. কোনো কাজ বা পরিস্থিতি কখন শুরু হয়েছে, সেই নির্দিষ্ট সময় বোঝাতে since ব্যবহার করা হয়।

12. Since vs For — Since ও For-এর পার্থক্য

since morning — সকাল থেকে
since childhood — শৈশব থেকে
since six o'clock — ছয়টা থেকে

13. By — নির্ধারিত সময়ের মধ্যে

We use by to show the latest time before which an action must be completed. কোনো কাজ সর্বশেষ কোন সময়ের মধ্যে সম্পূর্ণ করতে হবে তা বোঝাতে by ব্যবহার করা হয়।

14. Until and Till — কোনো সময় পর্যন্ত

We use until or till to show that an action or situation continues up to a particular time. কোনো কাজ বা পরিস্থিতি একটি নির্দিষ্ট সময় পর্যন্ত চলতে থাকে বোঝাতে until অথবা till ব্যবহার করা হয়।

I will wait until five o'clock.	আমি পাঁচটা পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করব।
The shop is open until ten.	দোকানটি দশটা পর্যন্ত খোলা থাকে।
She worked until midnight.	সে মধ্যরাত পর্যন্ত কাজ করেছিল।
Stay here till I return.	আমি ফিরে না আসা পর্যন্ত এখানে থাকো।
The offer is valid until Friday.	প্রস্তাবটি শুক্রবার পর্যন্ত বৈধ।

Until এবং till-এর অর্থ প্রায় একই। Till তুলনামূলকভাবে বেশি অনানুষ্ঠানিক।

15. By vs Until — By ও Until-এর গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পার্থক্য

Action must be completed before or at a deadline. সময়সীমার আগে বা সেই সময়ে কাজ শেষ হবে।	Action continues up to a time. কাজটি একটি সময় পর্যন্ত চলবে।

16. From...to and From...until — শুরু থেকে শেষ পর্যন্ত

We use from...to or from...until to show the beginning and end of a period. একটি সময়কালের শুরু ও শেষ বোঝাতে from...to অথবা from...until ব্যবহার করা হয়।

We use within to mean before the end of a stated period. উল্লেখ করা সময়কাল শেষ হওয়ার আগেই কোনো কাজ হবে বোঝাতে within ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Please reply within two days.	দয়া করে দুই দিনের মধ্যে উত্তর দিন।

18. In + Period for Future Time — ভবিষ্যতে কত সময় পরে

We use in + period of time to mean after that amount of time from now. এখন থেকে কত সময় পরে কোনো ঘটনা ঘটবে বোঝাতে in + period of time ব্যবহার করা হয়।

I will call you in ten minutes.	আমি তোমাকে দশ মিনিট পরে ফোন করব।
The train will arrive in an hour.	ট্রেনটি এক ঘণ্টা পরে পৌঁছাবে।

19. Ago — বর্তমান থেকে অতীতে

We use ago to count backwards from the present to a past time. বর্তমান থেকে অতীতের দিকে সময় গণনা করতে ago ব্যবহার করা হয়।

Ago comes after the time expression. Ago সময়ের expression-এর পরে বসে।

I saw him two days ago.	আমি তাকে দুই দিন আগে দেখেছিলাম।

We use throughout when something happens or continues during the whole period. কোনো ঘটনা পুরো সময়কালজুড়ে ঘটে বা চলতে থাকে বোঝাতে throughout ব্যবহার করা হয়।
